The modern revolution is defined by “With the rise of global exchange and commerce, particularly in the 200 years since the start of the industrial revolution, collective learning has accelerated. Standards of living have steadily risen and, for better and worse, humans have gained control over much of the biosphere.” The modern revolution has been a negative force because with new technology and everything needing to be bigger and better we are destroying our planet faster, governments have more power than ever, and overpopulation is closer than ever before.
Along with new technologies and medicines, the modern revolution has also brought pollution and destruction of our natural world. With more cities popping up and people wanting bigger better things, we are putting more pollution into our environment and destroying more forests and habitats. “The concentration of CO2 is increasing from decade to decade. According to a report in the journal Science, we would have to go back 15 million years to find levels as high as they are today” (Text 08) The more we build and the more we advance, the more chemicals and pollution we are dispensing into the atmosphere. With rising CO2 levels we are melting ice caps and raising the temperature of the earth.
The technology that came with the modern revolution brought new governments fighting each other and their people for power. During the modern revolution, many genocides took place and mass destruction weapons were created. From the year 1900-1989, there were 129,547,000 people killed by their government, 38,566,000 people were killed through genocide totaling at 169,202,000 citizens murdered by their government and none of them were soldiers killed in war. (text 07) Governments are gaining more power and when that gets threatened the use force and murder to get what they want. Governments have been able to start wars and control their citizens easier than ever before.
The modern revolution brought new doctors and new medicines with it. We are now able to monitor disease and stop them before they start. In 1700 the life expectancy was 27 and the population was .68 billion, in the year 2050 the life expectancy will be 74 and the world population will be 8.92 billion. (text 01) Now as positive as it is that we are living longer and exploring new modes of health and safety we are overpopulating our earth and that is causing the destruction of our planet. Planet earth can hold approximately 10 billion people and in 2017 there are 7.5 billion people living here now which means that our planet is very close to being overpopulated already.
In conclusion, the modern revolution has been a negative force because it has brought pollution, power-obsessed governments, and overpopulation. We would have to slow down and re-think our energy sources in order to help fix the problems the modern revolution has brought about.
