Dear Governor Lamont,
I believe what you are doing with the vaccine laws is well overdue. Vaccines are one of the easiest ways we can prevent destructive infectious diseases. It is too easy in many states, Connecticut being one of them, to get a religious exemption from a vaccine. I believe that we should not get rid of the religious exemption, we just need to change the way it is handled and what parents have to do in order to qualify.
The amount of religions that are anti-vaccine is so small that they should be allowed to take advantage of community immunity. Some states have stricter rules as to what qualifies as a religious exemption and I believe that this state should adopt some of those as well. There is evidence that shows the increase in religious exemptions and the decrease in children being vaccinated, this increase is probably not due to an increase of religion, but of an increase of parents finding loopholes. If the loophole is just patched and not removed then kids will have to get vaccinated but it will still be respectful of the handful that religiously believe they should not get vaccinated.
I believe that when a parent goes to get their child exempt, even true religious exemptions, they should have to show that they have gotten paperwork and information from doctors about vaccines and the diseases they control. Vaccines are at the fault of their own success, because of the work they've done people forget how terrible these diseases are, so they are more likely to fall for the propaganda surrounding vaccines. Parents should have to “renew” the religious exemption every year with the same evidence they had to use when they first got it.
Some believe that we should get rid of the exemption altogether, and others believe that we should always let parents decide. However, because of a lack of education about vaccines and the diseases, some parents make the decision based on unfounded claims, this is why I believe all parents need more education on the subject and if they want to try and get a religious exemption they should have to prove that they have learned the dangers of the diseases and the truth about the vaccines. I believe that it is ethical to make everyone, that doesn't have a religious exemption, get vaccinated because it is not fair for young children and others to be at risk because of a parent’s uninformed decision. When it is for the good of the general public and you are able to do something to prevent the diseases from affecting those who can’t, you should have to take those preventative steps.
