Steam Project, Bionics- April 2018

Bionics may not affect your life but for some people they are an irreplaceable part of them and their life. Bionics can range anywhere from eyes to paws for your pets. Bionics are mechanical devices that can be implanted into the human body to help those that have lost their sight, a major organ, or a limb. Bionics are a study of mechanical devices that function like living organisms or part of a living organism. These devices can be life changing and the sciences are quickly changing to make lives better.
Bionics can “restore” vision, replace limbs, and even take the place of major organs. Although bionic “eyes” can not completely replace sight they can dramatically change a visually disabled persons life. Bionic science is amazing development, scientists have been able to build 50% of the human body through bionic engineering. Bionic “eyes” are glasses with cameras that are able to take a picture and translate it into a high contrast version of what someone is seeing, and turn it into a black and white pixelated image of what is in front of someone. Although it is not a perfect image, or even a color image it is a big step in the direction to fully restoring sight.
When you think of bionic organs you probably think of something  large and metal being implanted into someone to fully replace an organ. In reality bionic organs usually are not mechanical at all.  Bionic organs tend to actually just be bits of organ tissue that can be placed onto barely working organs that will help them to regrow, and rarely small mechanical pieces to help artificially regrow the organ. Scientists are hoping to be able to come up with fully mechanical organs that are more durable.
Bionics and electronics go hand in hand with each other because the science behind bionics is very similar to the science behind robotics. Bionics attach to the nerves inside of someone's body and use electrical impulses from the brain to act almost like the original body part, and bionic joints can act just like natural ones. Electronic science has advanced quickly in the past few years and its those advances that are helping bionic sciences vastly improve.
Bionics are only going to become more powerful and usable. Bionic eyes are becoming more like eyes and less like glasses, scientists are trying to figure out how to make pixelated images clearer. Bionic joints are becoming more usable and like the real thing. Although it is  hard to build bionic parts because in most cases they have to be partly inside of the body, advances like 3D printing is only making it easier.
