Sorghum- March 2017



Sorghum is a very versatile plant that can withstand all different weather types but grows best in warm climates. Sorghum Serving Size is 1 cup. In that one cup there are
138.4g of carbs,  20.4g of protein, and 6.6 total grams of fat. Sorghum is very similar to corn and wheat and is used in lots of cereal and granola bar type foods.  Sorghum promotes digestion is very rich in vitamins and is a good source of calcium. Sorghum was gathered in 8000 BC  by hunters and domesticated in about 8000 BC in Ethiopia. Sorghum is now grown all over the world and in the US it is grown on what's known as the “Sorghum belt” that runs from South Dakota to parts of Southern Texas. Sorghum is primarily grown in warmer climates and can withstand extreme droughts. Sorghum is grown and planted very similar to corn and is self fertilizing.
Considering Sorghum is a very hearty plant and is easy to plant there are not a lot of farming techniques. Two thing farmers are working on is making Sorghum use less water and making a hybrid that is resistant to herbicides
Sorghum is relatively cheap and easy to produce it is no longer a very important crop for the United States to produce. Scientist are using sorghum for biofuel.
