Net Neutrality- January 2018

"The Internet came together as a miracle, really. Anyone with a wire can publish, we need to keep it that way" Barry Diller. Net Neutrality was instituted in 2015 as a way to protect internet users from exploitation; now that Ajit Pai has joined the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) there is a danger that it will be repealed. Net Neutrality needs to be saved because the internet should be free and easily accessible, the government should not be able to pick and choose what consumers see, and it protects small businesses and their owners.
The internet was created to be a device that anyone with a computer could use and access, but in today’s age 70% of Americans own a computer, making the internet bigger and more powerful (Pewresearch).  In America we’ve made it so that there are only a couple massive companies running everything, because of this tech companies can charge whatever prices they want and the consumer has no choice but to use that device/ service. “The Internet, like the steam engine, is a technological breakthrough that changed the world”  Peter Singer. Net neutrality was implemented so that the big companies could not take advantage and so that they would not be able to favour one website over another. What a consumer expects to be there will no longer be lag free or costless.
America currently has a free internet meaning whatever gets posted online anyone can see, and the government can’t take it down. If the government controls the internet then anything they do not what the general public to see will be blocked, any news sources that speak out against the president will be removed from the front pages or become expensive. If media and news is not available to everyone then people will start to think the same and be brainwashed from their views.  Having net neutrality in place and keeping the internet “free and open...is essential to our democracy, economy, and modern way of life” (Jared Polis). Being a part of a democracy allows citizens to think for themselves, speak for themselves, create what they want, and share what they want. Eliminating net neutrality jeopardizes that ability.
In this day and age in order to be accessible and noticable a company must have a web presence and in order to have a web presence they must pay for a website and ads on other websites. “Without those regulations, GoodLight and other smaller businesses fear they may not have a level digital playing field to compete against deep-pocketed industry giants that could pay to get an edge online” (Hsu). If businesses have to pay for their website to be on the top of google searches or to have more adds, small businesses could get destroyed and become almost nonexistent.
Some may say that killing net neutrality is good because it helps the consumer. “Net neutrality regulation also effectively outlaws competing business models, which are good for customers and the economy as a whole. Competing business models allow experimentation, and this leads to providers serving customers better by meeting their needs more precisely.” (Washington Examiner). While this is true, once internet companies learn what their customers want and crush competitors, then they can charge whatever they want and become monopolies over everyone else.
Killing net neutrality not only threatens free internet, but it also lets the government control the public and it kills small businesses. Countries without net neutrality like Russia and China are places the US does not want to become like. Paying for internet searches will ruin internet in the modern day. Keeping net neutrality is important for the future of the internet, the future of business in America, and the future of free press.
