Language
“Feelings or emotions are the universal language and are to be honored. They are the authentic expression of who you are at your deepest place” Judith Wright. Most species have their own language, but humans are the only species that can understand an average of 20,000-35,000 words. Like people, dogs communicate through body language, sounds, and smell but they can only understand about 165-300 words which is equivalent to a 1-3 year old child. Language makes humans different because even though most species have a language, humans have the most advanced language with the most words, Human language is different by regions and countries, so it gives us more culture.
Humans are the most advanced species, and one of the reasons for that is language. Human language has evolved from scribbles to thousands of words and sentences. Humans have also used their intelligence to create 6,500 languages including nonverbal languages like body and sign language. Other species like monkeys can learn sign language and understand “human” words, but they have to be taught by humans. For example, Koko the gorilla “learned about 1,000 ASL signs and understands 2,000 spoken English words” (Text 06) In history there have been monkeys that were trained in English, but even still they can only understand the equivalent of a six year old child.
Almost every part and region of the world speaks a different language. Human language is complex, and everyone speaks differently, so it makes us have more diversity and personality than other species. “Honeybees use two different dances - a circle dance and a tail-wagging dance- to tell other bees where to find food.” (Text 02). All honeybees use the same two dances to portray the same idea. Humans have thousands of words that can communicate hundreds of different ideas in many different languages and every language uses different words.
Some people may say that language doesn't make humans different because we aren't the only language that communicates and because other species can learn our language. Although this is true human language has been advanced so much that monkeys can learn sign language and parrots can talk, and despite these claims, our language is still the most advanced and lets us learn about the fact that we can teach our language.
In the end, language makes humans different because we have a far more sophisticated language that is more than just words and our language makes us more diverse. Humans have used time to develop language and because there are so many of us we needed something to connect us through a common point.
