“Finally, a good prosecutor knows that her job is to enforce the law without fear or favor. Likewise, a Supreme Court Justice must interpret the laws without fear or favor” (Klobuchar). Whether one is a prosecutor, Supreme Court Justice or one that specializes in any other field of law, law is an interesting field to pursue because it affords one the ability to make significant change.Lawyers are generally very respected and have the ability to become politicians, Supreme Court Justices, and judges. The definition of a lawyer is someone who “Represent clients in criminal and civil litigation and other legal proceedings, draw up legal documents, or manage or advise clients on legal transactions. May specialize in a single area or may practice broadly in many areas of law.”( Lawyers Job Description) I am interested in becoming a lawyer because of the flexibility in the field and the opportunity to fight for what's right.
The process of becoming a lawyer is very long and requires lots of hard work. Good lawyers have good conversation and debate skills to help them in court and learn what their clients needs are.Law school graduates need to take a character test to make sure they have good reasoning and ethics. “Since the practice of law is such a high stakes endeavor, involving the finances and in some cases the freedom of clients,... This review includes question about academic conduct at law school; criminal history; social conduct in general... and other inquiries intended to gauge your ethical makeup” (Findlaw).
Lawyers complete levels of testing to ensure they are reputable and won't leak a client's information. The schooling process for lawyers starts after one obtains a Bachelor's degree. The first step of getting into law school is to take the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT). For most, law school lasts 3 years unless the student is interested in becoming a judge or someone of equal stature and power. “No matter how well you did in law school, you cannot legally practice law in a given state without passing that state's bar examination. Many attorneys have passed bar exams in several states, meaning they can practice law in each of those states”(Findlaw). The Bar Exam is the most important test a lawyer can take; It lasts 18 hours and 3 days. As stated above, after the Bar Exam lawyers will take a character review and finally prospective attorneys need to take a legally binding oath to uphold the constitution.
Many would think that big cities would need the most lawyers, but rural towns are actually in the most demand. Rural towns don't have a lot of lawyers because they have to charge cheaper rates and sometimes get harder cases. “For example, there are 159 counties in the state of Georgia; roughly 6 of them do not have lawyers, and 40 of the counties have 10 or less lawyers available to service clients. In addition, in the 93 counties in Nebraska, 12 of them do not have lawyers. Overall, roughly 20% of the United States population lives in an area that has little to no access to a legal professional” (Where Lawyers Are In High Demand) Places like Connecticut aren't in need of lawyers because the state is very residential whereas areas like Montana be in higher demand. On average lawyers make around $139,880 annually and $67.25 hourly.(BLS) One misconception about being a lawyer is that everyone is rich when in reality law school is so expensive that half of the money that's been earned is going to student loans. Some lawyers that have been in the field for a long time and have their loans paid off can become very wealthy. Lawyers that are working in rural areas make significantly less, around $74,930- $115,210 annually, so some companies are paying lawyers to move and work in those areas. “One way is by offering incentives to attorneys who choose to work in these areas. South Dakota made a “Rural Attorney Recruitment Program”, where they offer young, aspiring attorneys $12,000 per year for 5 years to those who work in a qualifying county with 10,000 people or less.” This program is helping to get legal opportunities to those who need it most and can't afford it .
Lawyers contribute to society because they are trained to uphold the constitution and give everyone the opportunity to freedom. They help keep the laws in place and can do pro bono work. Lawyers are also very helpful to those who are going through a hard time and only have one person who will stand up and fight for them. “lawyers see ways to change the world for good and are acting to make it so. And just as they said they would, the partners in your own firm are modeling volunteerism and public service regularly” ( Lawyers Can Give Back) Lawyers contribute to society by doing pro bono work, work for free, and helping those that generally get rejected, they are also the ones that keep the government and big corporations in check and make sure everyone gets treated how they should.
In conclusion law is a good field because there is a lot of stability and diversity. There are hundreds of jobs and specialties that one can do with a law degree.Lawyers are also very helpful to society and those that don't have access to copious amounts of money. Lawyers can sometimes get a bad rap for being rich and stuck up, but most of them became lawyers to help and defend the people in their communities.
