Community Service
“The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others.” -Albert Schweitzer. Community service is important because it helps you learn about yourself, others, and lets you do something that makes a difference. In the informational texts “Teaching Chess and Life,” “Community Service and You,” and an interview we learn about the benefits of community service.
In the informational text “Teaching Chess and Life” by Carlos Capellan, we learn about Carlos, a highschool student who got off the streets and ended up turning his lucky experience into community service. “I learned how to present myself in a positive way” (Capellan). Carlos was able to get off the drug and gang infested streets of his neighborhood and show himself as the person he was meant to be and used this part of him to help other kids get off the street.
In the informational text “Community Service and You” by Tj Staffer We learned about how people from all different communities and ages can make a difference with the right amount of effort. “Not only can you make a contribution to your community and make a difference in someone's life, you can learn new skills, network for future job contacts, and gain some valuable experience….” () By doing community service you can learn a lot about the world and other people. Community service lets you find new talents and hobbies from things you never even knew about
In the interview, I learned about how everything from the Informational texts rang true into people's personal experiences, I also learned that after community service you see a whole new side of yourself that you never knew.“.....because it's a way to help others that really need it’ ‘Community service helps the person you're doing it for and helps you express yourself and share what you love in a helpful way” (Bogush). You don't realize the extent of the problems around you or how much you can help people until you immerse yourself into doing good.
So Why do you participate in Community Service? You participate in community service so that you can not only help yourself but you can make a difference in the world at any age. Community service is a good way to immerse yourself in a culture and show yourself how little things can make a big difference
