Ten Years
“The Necklace” by Guy De Maupassant is about a beautiful woman who came from a poor family and married a poor man. She dreams of going to fancy dinner parties but once she was invited she had nothing to wear. Her husband gives up his savings so she can buy a dress and she borrowed a diamond necklace from a friend. When she lost the necklace, her husband gives up his night and ten years of his life. Monsieur Loisel is characterized as caring and loyal toward his wife as evidence of this commitment to her, this affects the plot because if Monsieur Loisel left his wife, then she would have never been able to raise enough money to buy the new necklace let alone pay it back.
In “The Necklace” Monsieur Loisel is caring toward his wife because when she was disappointed instead of excited to go to the party because she had nothing to wear. He gave up what he had been saving for himself “He turned a bit pale, for he had set aside just that amount to buy a rifle…However, he said, ‘All right. I'll give you four hundred francs….’” (Guy De Maupassant p161). He cares for his wife so much that he gave up his money instead of just telling her to wear a dress she already had. When Madame Loisel was still sad after a couple of days he offered to buy her flowers to wear and suggested that she should ask her friend for a necklace if she didn't want flowers.
Monsieur Loisel is also a very loyal person. When his wife lost the necklace he spent all of his savings to buy a new one and spent the next ten years of his life paying that off. “He went about raising the money...risking his signature...terrified by the outlook of the future” (Guy De Maupassant p167). He risked his reputation and his future so that he and his wife could continue living together. Monsieur Loisel shows he's loyal because he could have left his wife when things got bad, but instead he stayed with her and helped pay off the debt she caused.
Monsieur Loisel cared for his wife and stayed loyal through the hard times. He has an impact on the other characters because he always gave his wife a little bit of hope and practically raised the money by himself to pay back the necklace. If Monsieur Loisel wasn't a caring person than his wife would never have gotten her dream of going to a fancy dinner party and being the main attraction, and if he wasn't loyal then his wife would never be able to buy a new necklace.
